Job Description

A Data Center Operations Engineer is the front-line responder who monitors, maintains, and troubleshoots a facility's critical infrastructure. While the Operations Manager handles budgets and personnel, the Engineer works directly on the floor executing preventative maintenance, reacting to automated alarms, and ensuring that power and cooling systems remain online.

They are the technical backbone of daily, hands-on facility uptime.

📋 Job Summary

The Data Center Operations Engineer performs daily inspections, routine maintenance, and rapid troubleshooting of mission-critical electrical, mechanical, and building control systems. Working in a high-availability environment, this role ensures all equipment operates within safe parameters, executes emergency failover procedures, and supports customer deployment requirements under strict safety guidelines.

🛠️ Key Duties & Responsibilities

Routine Maintenance & PMs: Execute preventative and corrective maintenance on critical systems (e.g., generator testing, UPS battery checks, chiller filter replacements) following strict standard operating procedures.
Continuous Monitoring: Monitor Building Management Systems (BMS) and Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS) to track facility health, power usage (PUE), and environmental conditions.
Emergency First Response: Act as the first line of defense during infrastructure anomalies, executing Emergency Operating Procedures (EOPs) to isolate faults and restore system redundancy.
Work Order Execution: Coordinate and supervise third-party vendors performing specialized servicing, ensuring strict adherence to Method of Procedures (MOPs) and safety protocols.
Capacity Tracking: Perform regular physical walk-throughs to log equipment readings, identify potential hot spots, and track available electrical and space capacity.
Deployment Support: Assist with or manage smart-hands requests, facility structural adjustments, and critical space configurations to support new hardware installations.

🎓 Experience & Requirements

Education: Technical diploma or degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, HVAC systems, or equivalent military background (e.g., Navy Nuclear program).
Experience: Typically requires 2 to 5 years of hands-on experience in a critical environment (Data Centers, semiconductor facilities, hospitals, or marine engineering).
Technical Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of critical infrastructure components including generators, UPS systems, chillers, CRAH units, and fire suppression systems.
Physical Requirements: Ability to work in variable noise environments, lift heavy equipment, and participate in a 24/7/365 shift rotation (including nights, weekends, and holidays).
